Exploring the LHC medium with electromagnetic probes

چکیده

Heavy-ion collisions will enter a new era with the start of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A first short run with proton-proton collisions at the injection energy of 0.9 TeV will be followed by a longer one with pp collisions at 10 TeV. First Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN=5.5 TeV will take place in 2009. Three experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS) will study both pp and Pb-Pb collisions. A selection of results showing the capabilities of the three experiments for the study of the LHC medium with electromagnetic probes is presented. In-medium effects on electromagnetic probes

We discuss some of the aspects of the physics of relativistic nuclear collisions, in particular those having to do with the observation of electromagnetic radiation. We concentrate on what such measurements tell us about the local, in-medium properties of the environment from which they emerge. The contribution from different sources are considered: that from the partonic sector of QCD, and tha...

Quarkonia and heavy flavors at the LHC

Perspectives for measurements of quarkonia and heavy flavors in heavy ion collisions at the LHC are reviewed. 1 Quarkonia and heavy flavors: what is different at the LHC With a nucleus-nucleus center-of-mass energy nearly 30 times larger than the one reached at RHIC, the LHC will open a new era for studying the properties of strongly interacting matter at extreme energy densities [1]. One of th...

Heavy Ion Physics with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC

The heavy-ion program at the LHC will be pursued by three experiments including ATLAS, a multipurpose detector to study p+p collisions. A report on the potential of the ATLAS detector to uncover new physics in Pb+Pb collisions at energies thirty times larger than energy available at RHIC is presented. Key aspects of the heavy-ion program of the ATLAS experiment, with the emphasis on extending m...

Predictions for the Heavy-ion Programme at the Large Hadron Collider

I review the main predictions for the heavy-ion programme at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, as available in early March 2009. I begin by remembering the standard claims made in view of the experimental data measured at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN and at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the BNL. These claims will be used for later discussion of the new oppor...

Assessment of the adecuacy of KIM-LHC method in assessing the risk level based on biomechanical loads for manual lifting tasks: A laboratory study

Introduction: Manual Material handling includes activities in which pushing, pulling, lifting, lowering, carrying, and holding the load, the most common of which is lifting. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of the KIM-LHC method to identify high-risk manual load lifting tasks. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on healthy male workers with a history of m...
